New Program: The Confederacy(?)

The name is still in the works, but the idea remains sound.

Confederation: Usually created by treaty but often later adopting a common constitution, confederations tend to be established for dealing with critical issues such as defense, foreign affairs, or a common currency, with the central government being required to provide support for all members. A confederation, in modern political terms, is usually limited to a permanent union of sovereign states for common action in relation to other states.

Perhaps one of the chief impediments to a de facto state is recognition from the International Community. A reference in the book Statehood and the Law of Self-Determination By David Raic (ISBN 904111890X, 9789041118905) from International Law, vol 1 (1st edition) states that:

[i]nternational Law does not say that a State is not in existence as long as it is not recognized, but it takes no notice of it before it's recognition. Through recognition only and exclusively a State becomes an International Person and a subject of International Law.

Other articles on the subject point out the "State of Palestine" as an example. So how does one go about gaining International Support? That is the question I'm dedicated to exploring at the moment. So far my solution hinges on a Confederacy of Free States (interestingly enough "CFS"), basically a collection of current, active and valid de facto states that can be valued contributors to a larger self-governed entity. It also involves islands and oil tankers and the science of hydroelectrics and wind power. Certainly this is a long and involved process, one that will require the social networking skills of a top diplomat as well as the ability to provide incentive to those members of the UN who hold veto powers. I'm looking forward to it.

As with most things my interest has been renewed. When I heard about the Lakota withdrawing from treaties held with the US in an effort to create an independent state I realized that without passion and drive nothing will happen. Lacking true passion and suffering from broken drive I'll settle for renaming the project and focusing on...other aspects of my idea.

In the following months I hope to update more regularly with an unedited, as-it-comes, sci-fi story based in my "Beyond the Planet" universe. Please keep in mind I have almost no background in science or astronomy.

A little bit about "Beyond the Planet"

The year is 2832 and it has been one hundred years since the Antioch Jihad and the loss of Earth's coordinates. Humanity is at war with itself, fighting over the outer most colonies in a sporadic civil war that has waxed and waned for the past century. The Pan-Galactic Congress, a conglomerate of powerful corporate Houses that oversee a congress of planetary governors, struggles to keep humanity unified and profits in the black while Black Flag, a "group" of radical anarchists, seek to free the "enslaved colonists" in the border zones and carve out their own pseudo-empire. Through it all drift the Nomads, expatriated individuals from both sides of the conflict trying to eke out a survival. Living and working in sector spanning flotillas, these galactic gypsies are the object of fear and prejudice and are often prohibited from entering Tier 1 sectors. It is a turbulent time with expeditions in the Dark Sectors starting to vanish with startling regularity, a burgeoning psychic population, and the first known instance of a rampant AI. Humanity has several paths ahead of it and those who will set the course in years to come will create an echo heard across generations.
